Kelli Maeshiro

Fly and Never Come Down
Mixed Media 40” x 40” x 84”

A mixed media piece exploring abstraction in terms of its formlessness or anti-form, its material deconstruction via process, producing meta-nar- ratives about transitory states of being and sublime transfor- mation, that allow metaphors of temporality and transport to come across like organic mate- rial, or atmospheric mass, guiding lights and transport vessels.

The sculptural work are composed like tissue formation or cellular membranes, that flow, grow, and connect across its threshold. Incorporating a variety of materials the work reveals the process of its manufac- ture, an apparent critique on the de-skilling of craft in post- modernist fashion, similar in approach by artists of process art or scatter art inclinations such as Barry Le Va, Polly Apfelbaum, or Sarah Sze.

KELLI MAESHIRO IS A CONTEMPORARY artist whose works incorporate elements of traditional Japanese craft and dyeing with contemporary materials such as synthetic fibers, plastics, and everyday materials to create a range of works from paintings and small sculptures to multi-lay ered expansive installations of objects, fabric, and paper. Born in Ishinomaki, Japan, Maeshiro is a transnational adoptee to a Japanese-American family from Honolulu, Hawaii. Her work addresses her multilayered identity by creating works that address the longing and forget- ting aspects of an identity in the flux of belonging.
